Wizard of Oz in Malta
I had a magnificent experience yesterday. Last time I shared some Christmas activities, so I decided to attend at least one of them. From the list of several parties and cultural programs I chose the culture this time, as in Malta there are not many events of this type.
The Wizard of Oz is a very important milestone in my life. I spent long hours with listening my cassettes when I was a little girl. The double packs of Bambi and Wizard of Oz tapes definitely made my childhood, so I was incredibly happy when I got tickets for this show.
Most of us know the story of Dorothy Gale (and her dog Toto) from Kansas, whose house is carried away by the tornado. She wakes up in a beautiful village and meets Glenda, the Good Witch of the North, who advises her to seek for a help of the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City, who can help her to get back home. On her way on the Yellow Brick Road Dorothy meets a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, who are joining her in hopes that the Wizard will also fulfill their desires. Classic.
Well, this show brings us something more, something special, something unique and something very entertaining. Before the start I was really excited, but honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I thought it will be just another performance of the story. I need to inform you, it’s a lot more than that!
It is a presentation of talented actors, singers and dancers on one podium with a very professional sceneries and backgrounds. There is also live music is provided by a band. Now there is a question what makes the performance unique and different from other classical ordinary shows. Well, it was a big surprise for me, but they extended the main four actors with plus one. At the beginning I was confused and it was hard to accept why they changed the basic story this way. Soon I realized it was an amazing idea!
Wizard of Oz is written by Alan Montanaro, who actually plays that mentioned +1 role. He is an amazing performer and entertainer, as if he would just jump out from those well-known American talk-shows. He was constantly entertaining the audience and made the whole performance spontaneous and simply funny. I was just sitting there amazed, with open mouth and could not believe my eyes and ears.
But to turn the article back to more professional and informative…
The Malta Amateur Dramatic Club (MADC) is Malta’s oldest theatre company established in 1910. Today such comment as “very professional”, “high standards” and “very good company, very good actors and various productions” have become synonymous with the MADC.
Wizard of Oz is directed by Marco Calleja & Denise Mulholland, casting: Alan Montanaro, Izzy Warrington, Bettina Paris, Philippa Cassar, Gianella Mazzola, Chantelle Micallef Grimaud, Andy Catania, Alex Gatesy Lewis, Ralph Mangion, Chris Hudson, Paula Fleri Soler, Maria Buckle and Chiara Hyzler. The show is on between 22th December and 6th January at MFCC Arena (Ta’ Qali), so if you hurry up, you can still book some tickets. I suggest you not to hesitate more as all dates are almost fully booked by now. You can also check out the Facebook event.
Sometimes words are not enough, so I tried to make some pictures and videos, just to impress you more (which have worse quality because of the strong lightning). However few media files are definitely not enough to describe how much fun we had during those three hours! It is a perfect pastime for kids and adults as well.
