Following last year’s amazing turnout and enthusiastic increase in participation, it is apparent that the President’s Fun Run has become a yearly staple within the national Maltese calendar of events. The Fun Run is a national activity aimed at promoting joy, sportsmanship, community, and solidarity, and will once more be taking place this year for its 8th edition under the common banner of ‘One Nation, One Heartbeat’.
The President’s Solidarity Fun Run 2016, in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, was first launched at the Kirkop Sports Complex on 23 October, where President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca called upon the Maltese and Gozitan people, be they members of sports teams, such as football teams, rugby teams, and basketball teams, as well as children, teenagers, adults and the elderly, to join in the Fun Run, which seeks to unify people from all walks of life as one nation in aid of the Community Chest Fund, which is a Charitable Foundation.
The aim of the Community Chest Fund is to help philanthropic institutions as well as individuals with different needs through the raising of funds during various activities, such as balls, concerts and sporting activities. The Malta Community Chest Fund also relies on the generosity of corporate companies and the general public. This Foundation focuses mostly on generating income to help individuals who need chemotherapy or any other type of specialised medicine which is not part of the list of medicines given through State Aid. It also supports the family members of patients who need to go abroad for medical treatment, as well as giving support through the provision of medical equipment, such as mobility aids, vehicles modified for persons with special needs, etc. Apart from all of this, the Malta Community Chest Fund also helps NGOs through a system of fund applications for social or infrastructural projects.
This year, the Fun Run will be taking place on the 6th of November, starting at 10.00am. There will be four routes. The run itself will depart from Saqqajja Hill in Rabat, and will consist of 11.13km. Those who prefer to walk, will be able to follow one of three routs; one departing from Paola Square and consisting of 5.35km, one from the University of Malta which will be 4.69km long, and one from Santa Venera, which will be 4.49km long. All routes meet at the Portes des Bombes, which is when all those attending will proceed to St George’s Square for the Big Finale of the Fun Run.
This event is being organised by SportMalta with the support of Banif Bank, together with; LiDL Malta, General Soft Drinks, Mapfre Middlesea, Trattoria La Bufala, Dragonara Brasserie, Valletta 2018 Foundation, Maltco Lotteries, Schwarzkopf, IRIS, LeoVegas, Betsson group, SAME Fashion, Ecabs, Dr Werner and Partner, Gioia, PowerHouse, Pure Concepts and AF Sign Studio.
